Thrush Symptoms

Thrush symptoms are the medical signs and symptoms that may be present in the case of oral thrush (oral Candida albicans infection). Candida is a yeast, so the condition can be considered a yeast infection or fungal infection.

Symptoms in adults

In adults, the following are some potential oral thrush symptoms:

Bad taste in the mouth
Burning sensation in mouth and throat
Poor sense of taste
White patches sticking in the mouth (cheeks, throat, etc.) and on the tongue
The tissue under the white patches may easily bleed if disturbed.

Symptoms in infants

Several possible symptoms of oral thrush in infants or babies are:

Diaper rash developing from yeast
Difficulty swallowing
Poor appetite
Sore tongue or mouth
White patches in the mouth, which may cover easily-bleeding tissue, as in adults

Please consider that there are additional oral thrush symptoms for these age groups, and also some symptoms or ones very similar may appear despite there being no case of thrush in the individual. For instance, a person may experience appetite loss for numerous reasons, which could be completely unrelated to the illness being discussed here.

Causes

Oral thrush causes can range over a selection of underlying medical conditions. Some possibilities are mentioned below:

Diabetes - high blood sugar may assist an overgrowth of Candida
Dry mouth (xerostomia) - possibly due to mouthwash overuse, Sjogren's syndrome, etc.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV/AIDS)
Poor dental hygiene / care
Pregnancy
Using certain medications such as antibiotics and some others
Weakened immune system (including infants with not-yet-fully-developed immune systems)

This is not a complete list of potential oral thrush causes. Talk to a doctor, medical professional, or qualified source for additional information for diagnosis and treatment of the potential case of oral thrush.
